Ex-Google DeepMind researcher adds to warnings that AI could 'kill all humans'

A former Google DeepMind researcher has joined the growing chorus of AI experts warning that the technology could lead to the extinction of humanity. Bilal Chughtai, who recently resigned from the company, expressed his belief that AI has the potential to wipe out all humans and that time may be running out to prevent this catastrophic outcome. Chughtai, who previously worked on AGI safety and alignment research at Google DeepMind, co-authored research papers while at the company and left in July 2026.

Google was not available to comment on the matter at the time of reporting. The growing alarm over AI's potential dangers has been underscored by recent comments from other AI researchers. Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon recently resigned from his position, partly due to his conviction that AI could ultimately lead to human extinction within the next decade. Evan Hubinger, a scientist at Anthropic, echoed similar concerns, stating that he believes there is a greater than 10% chance of this outcome.

In response to these concerns, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for a temporary slowdown in the development of advanced AI systems. This call for caution has garnered support from high-profile figures such as SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The debate over AI doomerism has been fueled by differing perspectives, with some experts advocating for a more cautious approach to AI development, while others dismiss the warnings as a "hoax."
