Trump calls AI a ‘hoax’ in surprise onstage call with Nvidia’s Jensen Huang

President Donald Trump dismissed concerns about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence on Monday, stating that the U.S. already possesses sufficient safeguards to regulate and prosecute AI companies. He claimed that a strong and intelligent president, like himself, provides the necessary control needed for AI. Trump wrote on social media that the only control AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!)

PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. possesses that in abundance. He added that China would benefit from doubts cast on AI development. Trump is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping next week in Washington.

While industry leaders have called for slowing the pace of AI development, Trump argued that the AI industry's plea for regulation is a hoax. Vice President JD Vance, separately, expressed skepticism about AI executives urging the U.S. government to regulate the sector. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson expects Trump to meet with AI executives this week or early next week to discuss the companies' responsibilities in maintaining safety and the extent of government involvement.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed a three-step framework in an essay to slow AI development and create more time to manage its risks, which was endorsed by several other major AI company executives, including Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Meanwhile, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang addressed AI safety concerns during an event in Los Angeles, suggesting that voluntary actions like pausing and pacing could be taken by companies feeling out of control.

Trump, who spoke with Huang during the event, emphasized the economic benefits of data centers and dismissed critics of AI development as potentially aiding adversaries like China.
