Ex-Google DeepMind researcher adds to warnings that AI could 'kill all humans'

A former Google DeepMind employee, Bilal Chughtai, warned on Monday that artificial intelligence could "kill all humans," stating that time may be running out to prevent such an outcome. This follows recent concerns about the potential danger posed by AI, with public alarm growing after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned, in part due to his belief that AI could lead to human extinction by the end of the decade.

Evan Hubinger, another Anthropic scientist, supported Coxon's views, expressing a greater than 10% chance that AI could kill all humans within the next decade.

Chughtai, who worked on AGI safety and alignment research at Google DeepMind, resigned from the company in July 2026. He co-authored research papers while at DeepMind and explained in a statement that while navigating AI safely was possible, it required coordination to avoid a "manic race between AI companies." He emphasized the need to pace AI development to a speed that society can handle, allowing emerging risks to be addressed before extreme harm is realized.

Google did not respond to a request for comment, but Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a slowdown in advanced AI development over the weekend, garnering support from Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Their comments sparked a debate over AI "doomerism." However, President Donald Trump dismissed the warnings, labeling the AI industry's call for regulation as a "hoax."
