Tamil Nadu CB-CID nabs Rajasthan scammer who circulated Al-generated deep fake video impersonating CM Vijay

The Tamil Nadu Crime Branch CID has apprehended an individual in Rajasthan who allegedly created and disseminated deep fake videos featuring Hindi audio, impersonating Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay. The police stated that the accused and his associates utilized the videos to solicit financial assistance from the public through a WhatsApp number.

During routine cyber monitoring, the Crime Branch Cyber Investigation Department (CBCID) identified the Al-generated videos, leading to the formation of a special investigation team. The probe revealed that the scammers had defrauded numerous individuals across Madhya Pradesh and other states using these deceptive videos. Following the takedown of the deep fake Al videos, investigators obtained information from intermediaries and service providers, conducting a thorough examination of digital footprints.

The prime suspect was traced to Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where he was apprehended with assistance from local law enforcement. Seized electronic devices included mobile phones and other gadgets used in the offense. The arrested individual was produced in a local court before being transferred to Chennai for further legal proceedings.

Police noted that many similar videos were being shared on Pakistani-based Facebook accounts. Despite the difficulties encountered, the authorities are intensifying their digital investigation to identify foreign perpetrators and uncover any local collaborators. Director-General of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal commended the officers and team for their technical expertise which facilitated the successful arrest.
