Put up in resorts, Congress’s Jaipur candidates leave for home over ‘lack of rooms, food’

After the Rajasthan civic election results were announced on Monday, several Congress candidates from Jaipur Municipal Corporation continued to stay at resorts until September 21, as a measure to avoid horse-trading. While the Congress put its candidates in Asithiriya Resort near Nayi Ka Nath Dham in Bassi, the BJP placed its members at Bhanwar Resort on Delhi Road.

The candidates were transported in buses and required to bring clothing and essentials for their stay, which was initially scheduled until the nomination date of September 21. However, with five booths in Jaipur set for re-polling, the deadline may be postponed.

A number of Congress candidates expressed dissatisfaction with the accommodations provided by the party, alleging poor facilities and inadequate food. Candidates from Malviya Nagar, Sanganer, and Bagru Assembly constituencies specifically mentioned struggles with room availability and meal provision. Some candidates even turned back early, citing concerns about the resort's offerings.

Deepak Dandoriya, son of Meena Dandoriya, a candidate from Civil Lines constituency, explained that the shortage of rooms and late arrival of candidates from Alwar led to his mother's decision to return home. Women candidates faced additional challenges, often traveling with children, and found it difficult to secure meals after reaching the resort.

Security initially prevented some candidates from leaving the resort, but they were allowed to depart later. Congress spokesperson Swarnim Chaturvedi acknowledged initial mistakes and stated that preparations have since been rectified, with councillors across the state being accommodated appropriately. With the BJP securing 78 seats and the Congress 53 out of the total 150 seats in Jaipur, the defeated candidates from both parties have been sent back home. They will remain at the resorts until a mayor is appointed.
