StatCan says Canada’s 2026 census participation was among highest ever

Statistics Canada reports that the response rate for Canada's 2026 population census was an impressive 98.4 percent, marking one of the highest participation rates ever recorded. The census, conducted every five years, collects crucial demographic data such as age, gender, marital status, and language use to inform various aspects of Canadian life, including electoral boundaries, social program planning, and municipal funding allocation.

As the census season unfolded this spring, some individuals shared photos of their completed forms with the message "return to sender," expressing concerns over potential privacy violations. In response, Liberal MP Mark Gerretsen called upon citizens to complete the questionnaire. Non-compliance with the census can result in a fine of up to $500.

Statistics Canada has already commenced the process of compiling the collected data, with the agency set to release the first batch of seven information releases beginning in February 2027. The census saw an unprecedented level of participation, with over 88 percent of Canadians opting to submit their responses online, a record-breaking figure that surpassed previous usage rates.
