Ferry and passenger boat accidents in Southeast Asia

Over the past week, two deadly ferry incidents in Indonesia and the Philippines have highlighted the importance of maritime safety in Southeast Asia. With over 17,000 islands in Indonesia and more than 7,600 in the Philippines, ferries play a crucial role in the region's transport network.

In Indonesia, a passenger ship with 243 people onboard capsized in the Java Sea on September 13, 2026, resulting in six deaths and 129 people still missing. The Java Sea has witnessed numerous major accidents, including the Tampomas II sinking in 1981 that killed around 600 people and a plane crash in 2007 that claimed over 100 lives.

On September 9, 2026, a ferry carrying more than 130 people caught fire on its way from Manila to Coron in Palawan, Philippines. The MV June Aster burned, resulting in at least 76 deaths and 13 people reported missing.

In August 2026, a ferry traveling from Bali to Lombok, Indonesia, caught fire, leading to one death and over 200 people rescued. Another ferry tragedy occurred off Madura Island in August 2026, where five people died and 233 passengers and crew were rescued after the vessel caught fire.

In Vietnam, a speedboat capsized near the southern island of Phu Quoc on July 11, 2026, killing at least 15 Indian tourists while 21 people were rescued. Additionally, on January 18, 2026, a vessel carrying over 300 people capsized en route to the southern province of Sulu in the Philippines, resulting in at least 18 deaths. In December 2025, Spanish soccer coach Fernando Martin and his three children died after their boat capsized near the popular tourist spot of Padar Island Strait in Indonesia.
