Nigerians have not questioned Peter Obi’s source of wealth – Idam

Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam stated on Monday that Nigerians have not seriously questioned the source of the wealth of NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi. This is due to the belief that he has made his money legitimately. The debate intensified after pictures surfaced of Obi's wife Margaret Brownson carrying an expensive Hermès handbag. The bag's value was estimated at over N200 million, sparking outrage on social media.

Idam argued that Obi's wife's spending habits seemed extravagant, especially in a country where many struggle to survive. However, he noted that Obi had never presented his wife as a frugal model for Nigerians to follow. He also pointed out that Obi had made significant donations from his personal funds to various causes without anyone raising questions about the source of his wealth.

The lawyer concluded that if Obi's wealth was legitimately earned, then there was no reason to scrutinize his personal spending as long as it didn't compromise the interests of Nigerians. He emphasized that the important question for a candidate seeking public office should be about the legitimacy of his wealth and whether public resources were being misused, rather than merely criticizing his wife's extravagant lifestyle.
