Ferry and passenger boat accidents in Southeast Asia

Over the past week, two deadly ferry accidents in Indonesia and the Philippines have highlighted maritime safety concerns in Southeast Asia. Indonesia, with over 17,000 islands, relies heavily on ferries as a crucial part of its transport network. The region has experienced several maritime accidents involving passenger ferries and tourist boats.

In Indonesia, a passenger ship carrying 243 people capsized in the Java Sea on September 2026, resulting in six deaths and leaving 129 people missing. The Java Sea has witnessed numerous major air and maritime accidents, such as the Tampomas II sinking in 1981, which claimed around 600 lives, and a plane crash in 2007 that killed over 100 people.

On the same day in the Philippines, a ferry carrying over 130 people caught fire en route from Manila to Coron in Palawan. The MV June Aster burned off Coron, killing at least 76 people and leaving 13 missing. In Indonesia, a ferry traveling from Bali to Lombok caught fire on August 2026, leading to one death and the rescue of over 200 people. Another ferry fire off Madura island resulted in five deaths and the rescue of 233 passengers and crew.

In Vietnam, a tourist boat capsized off Phu Quoc island in July 2026, killing at least 15 Indian tourists and rescuing 21 people. In January 2026, a vessel carrying more than 300 people capsized in the Philippines, claiming at least 18 lives. Lastly, in December 2025, a boat capsized near the tourist spot of Padar Island in Indonesia, resulting in the deaths of Spanish soccer coach Fernando Martin and his three children.
