'This may be my last,' Abang Johari hints at final term

KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has suggested his current term may be his final, hinting that older leaders should step aside for younger members, according to reports. Abang Johari, the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president, was quoted in a Borneo Post article as stating this may be his last time.

Speaking at the launch of the PBB Northern Zone Special Convention in Miri, Sarawak, the 80-year-old leader stated that the party must prepare younger members for future leadership roles as part of a natural succession process. "Four more years, I'll be 80. I want to be frank, this may be my last time," he said. Despite feeling young at heart, Abang Johari acknowledged that nature dictates change.

"Even if we feel young at heart, we cannot go against nature," he added. Abang Johari emphasized that PBB's strength should not rest on individual leaders but rather on a smooth transition to the younger generation. Members should embrace leadership changes as part of nature's course and concentrate on ensuring the party's ongoing struggle for Sarawak.

"We cannot go against nature," he reiterated, emphasizing that PBB would endure due to its established system ensuring continuity. He also stressed the importance of adequately preparing the younger generation, urging them to acquire leadership skills and the ability to communicate and engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds and religions.
