Hyundai Motor to roll out in-house driver-assist system in 2029

Hyundai Motor Group plans to introduce vehicles with its own driver-assistance software in 2029, two years later than initially scheduled, according to a report. The company will collaborate with Nvidia, a U.S. chipmaker, to launch advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including Level 2+ and Level 2++, by 2028. This delay highlights the difficulties Hyundai faces in developing automated driving software in-house, which was originally intended for a late-2027 release.

Park Min-woo, a president at Hyundai Motor Group, stated that the partnership with Nvidia is not aimed at relinquishing control entirely, but rather involves co-designing the technology and utilizing data from the system to enhance its proprietary platform, Atria. Initially, Hyundai vehicles powered by Nvidia's Hyperion 10 platform will omit lidar sensors, relying on cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar.

However, the company may incorporate lidar for Level 3 automated systems, which enable hands-free driving under specific conditions. Park emphasized the importance of sensor redundancy for safety, though he did not specify a timeline for Level 3 commercialization. Hyundai and Kia Corp, together the world's third-largest automaker, aim to accumulate more driving data than competitors by 2033 through their extensive fleet scale.
