Hyundai Motor to roll out in-house driver-assist system in 2029

Hyundai Motor Group plans to introduce vehicles with its own driver-assistance software in late 2029, two years behind schedule. The company will collaborate with Nvidia, a U.S. chipmaker, to launch advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) in 2028. This shift highlights the difficulties Hyundai faces in developing autonomous driving software in-house, originally planned for a late-2027 release.

Concerns arise over Hyundai's increasing dependence on Nvidia, potentially putting it behind competitors like Tesla and Chinese rivals in vehicle autonomy. Hyundai president Park Min-woo clarified that the partnership is not about outsourcing the entire project. Hyundai will co-design the technology with Nvidia and use data from the system to enhance its own Atria software platform.

The automaker anticipates surging ahead of competitors in accumulated driving data by 2033 through its global fleet scale. Initially, Hyundai vehicles will use Nvidia's Hyperion 10 platform without lidar sensors, opting for cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar. However, the company is exploring lidar for Level 3 automated systems, which enable hands-off driving in specific conditions.

Park emphasized the importance of sensor redundancy for safety, but did not provide a timeline for Level 3 commercialisation. Hyundai and Kia Corporation, together the world's third-largest automaker, plan to leverage their massive fleet for autonomous driving data.
