Hyundai Motor to roll out in-house driver-assist system in 2029

Hyundai Motor Group announces plans to release vehicles with its own driver-assistance technology in 2029, two years later than initially expected. The company will work with Nvidia, a U.S. chipmaker, to deploy advanced driver-assistance systems, known as Level 2+ and Level 2++, in 2028. This shift highlights the difficulties Hyundai faces in developing autonomous driving software internally, a project originally targeted for a late-2027 launch.

Hyundai's partnership with Nvidia does not mean the company will abandon its own software development; instead, it will co-design the technology with Nvidia and utilize data from the system to enhance its own platform, named Atria. Hyundai vehicles powered by Nvidia's Hyperion 10 platform will initially forgo expensive lidar sensors, relying instead on cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar.

However, the company is considering incorporating lidar for its Level 3 systems, which enable hands-off driving under certain conditions. Hyundai and its affiliate, Kia Corp, aim to leverage their vast global fleet to gather data for training their autonomous driving technology. The automaker expects to accumulate more driving data than its competitors by 2033.

Hyundai Motor Group is further expanding its collaboration with Nvidia, focusing on autonomous driving, AI data centers, and humanoid robots developed by Hyundai-owned Boston Dynamics.
