Umno Youth backs mega gathering with PAS to unite Malay-Muslims

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth has pledged its support for a proposed mega unity gathering between PAS and Umno, aiming to enhance political cooperation between the two Malay-Muslim parties. Wing chief Dr Akmal Saleh revealed that the initiative, suggested by PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden during the Islamic party's muktamar, should transcend a mere assembly and foster constructive dialogue and resolutions for young Malays.

Addressing the Umno Youth assembly at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Akmal affirmed his readiness to respond to PAS's call. He emphasized that Umno Youth would deliberate on the future of the Malay community and devise practical strategies for young Malays via the Rimbun or national roundtable discussion program. The outcomes of this initiative would subsequently be disseminated across the nation through an ummah unity roadshow.

Akmal underscored that Umno and PAS must not forsake their individual identities for their collaboration to prosper. He clarified that mature unity does not necessitate discarding one's identity; rather, it demands navigating differences with wisdom. Additionally, Akmal dismissed allegations that his endeavors to bolster ties with PAS implied a pursuit for a new political ally, asserting that their objective was to identify common ground for the nation's future.

The proposed unity gathering has faced criticism, including personal attacks against Akmal. However, he vowed not to yield to pressure, nor would he retreat or compromise on the ummah unity cause.
