Akmal Saleh: Umno Youth ready to work with PAS in Melaka, state is next test for Malay-Muslim unity

Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, the Merlimau assemblyman and Umno Youth leader, expressed readiness to collaborate with PAS in the upcoming Melaka state election. Akmal believes that young voter support could contribute to another electoral victory for the coalition. He views Melaka as a critical test for the implementation of "penyatuan ummah" – the concept of uniting Malay-Muslim political parties into a cohesive electoral strategy.

The state has previously demonstrated its preference for BN, with Johor and Negri Sembilan already aligning with the coalition. Speaking at the Umno Youth general assembly, Akmal urged the party to replicate its success in the upcoming Melaka election. He emphasized that Umno Youth was prepared to work alongside PAS but clarified that he did not seek a candidate position, particularly if the People's Alliance (PH) was fielding a candidate.

However, Akmal expressed confidence that Umno's chairperson, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, would appreciate the coalition's involvement. The discussions on potential cooperation between Umno, PAS, and BN have been ongoing within the parties. Zahid previously authorized Melaka Chief Minister and BN chief Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh to negotiate partnerships with other parties, with the prospective alliance expected to bolster BN's chances of retaining power in the state.

Akmal advocated for addressing concerns of young Malaysians, such as housing, childcare, and financial pressures on young families. His proposal blended a plea for PAS collaboration with a demand for the youth wing to play a more significant role in shaping the party's election platform. Umno Youth's engagement with PAS had already begun three years prior, with discussions centered on national issues.

Akmal warmly welcomed PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib to the assembly, acknowledging the long-standing efforts to promote Malay-Muslim political unity.
