Apple made fun of Android apps on foldables, but iPhone Duo has the same problem [Gallery]

Foldable displays have long struggled with app compatibility issues, but both Android and iOS have been working to improve the situation. During the launch of the iPhone Duo, Apple CEO John Ternus made a comment about Android foldables letterboxing apps, a problem that iOS also exhibits. Early on, the announcement featured a video showcasing the letterboxing issue, which resulted in a square screen that wasn't ideal for users.

This problem was prominent in early Android foldables and was caused by apps that hadn't been updated to accommodate the unique form factor. However, Google and app developers have made strides to address this issue, even offering tablet layouts for certain apps before the iPad did. Despite Apple's historical advantage in this area, a recent update to iOS 27.1 indicates that the problem persists.

If an app isn't updated for iOS 27, it will be constrained with black bars on the sides, displaying a portrait view of the app. Apple's documentation reveals this same behavior, suggesting that the company is merely highlighting a longstanding issue to criticize Android.
