Volcanic ash grounds 20 Malaysia-Jakarta flights by Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air

KUALA LUMPUR, September 6 — Both Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air have canceled a combined total of 20 flights from Malaysia to Jakarta due to volcanic ash from the ongoing eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau affecting operations at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK). Malaysia Airlines announced it would cancel 12 flights between Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Jakarta (CGK), including MH713, MH712, MH711, MH710, MH717, MH716, MH721, MH720, MH723, MH722, MH725, and MH724.

The airline emphasized close monitoring of the evolving situation and urged passengers to update their contact information for timely notifications via email and SMS, or by contacting its Live Chat support. Batik Air canceled eight scheduled flights between Malaysia and Jakarta, comprising six services from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Jakarta and two from Subang to Jakarta.

The carrier cited close coordination with aviation authorities and airport operators, highlighting its commitment to passenger and crew safety. The presence of volcanic ash in the airspace can impair visibility, disrupt navigation systems, and potentially affect engine performance. Batik Air assured affected passengers could reschedule their travel or request a refund, with assistance available through its Customer Care Centre or booking channels.
