Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air cancel 20 Malaysia-Jakarta flights over volcanic ash

Two Malaysian airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air, have canceled a combined total of 20 flights between Malaysia and Jakarta due to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau's ongoing eruption, according to a post on X. Malaysia Airlines announced it was canceling 12 flights between Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Jakarta.

The national carrier advised passengers to update their contact details via My Booking on its website to receive updates via email and SMS. Batik Air reported canceling eight scheduled flights between the two countries, with six between Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Jakarta, and two between Subang and Jakarta. The airline cited close coordination with aviation authorities and airport operators, prioritizing passenger and crew safety.

Volcanic ash can reduce visibility, interfere with navigation systems, and potentially affect engine performance. Batik Air pledged to monitor the situation and provide updates through its website and social media channels. Affected passengers could request to reschedule their travel or seek a refund by contacting Batik Air's Customer Care Centre or their booking channels.

AirAsia also reported several flights to and from Jakarta affected by the volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau, which has been erupting since September 4 with ash plumes reaching up to 50,000 feet in some areas. Anak Krakatau is located between Java and Sumatra along the Pacific Ring of Fire, known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
