Volcanic ash grounds 20 Malaysia-Jakarta flights by Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 6 — Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air have grounded a combined 20 flights between their two countries, Malaysia and Indonesia, due to hazardous volcanic ash from the ongoing eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. The disruption impacts Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK).

Malaysia Airlines announced cancellation of 12 flights on X, including MH713, MH712, MH711, MH710, MH717, MH716, MH721, MH720, MH723, MH722, MH725 and MH724, between Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Jakarta (CGK). The airline emphasized the evolving nature of the situation and assured that passengers would receive direct updates. It advised customers to keep their contact information current for timely notifications via email, SMS or the My Booking platform.

Batik Air, a subsidiary of Lion Air Group, reported cancelling eight of its scheduled flights, including OD398, OD399, OD346, OD347, OD388, OD389, OD390 and OD391, between Malaysia and Jakarta. Six of these cancellations are between Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Jakarta, while two involve Subang to Jakarta routes. The airline cited cooperation with aviation authorities and airport operators in making the decision.

Volcanic ash can impair visibility, interfere with aircraft navigation, and potentially affect engine performance, Batik Air explained. It reiterated its commitment to passenger safety and continued to monitor the situation, providing updates on flight operations through its official website and social media channels. Affected passengers could opt for rescheduling their travel to the next available Batik Air flight, if available, or request a refund.
