Indonesia cancels flights at Jakarta airport as Anak Krakatau volcano erupts

Jakarta, Indonesia experienced a dramatic event on Sunday as the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted, resulting in the suspension of all flights at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport due to the presence of volcanic ash. The Geological Agency reported that the volcanic island situated in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra showed early signs of activity on Saturday, culminating in a 30-second eruption at 3:53 a.m. on Sunday.

Remarkably, there were no reported casualties, nor were any evacuation orders issued, as the nearest settlement was over 10 miles away. However, the agency cautioned residents and visitors to maintain a safe distance of at least 1.9 miles from the volcano's active crater. Volcanic ash affected areas in Jakarta, the capital, and Lampung, a province on the southern tip of Sumatra.

The Soekarno-Hatta International Airport temporarily halted its operations between 5:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. as a precautionary measure due to the increased volcanic activity.
