Indonesia cancels flights at Jakarta airport as Anak Krakatau volcano erupts

Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano erupted early Sunday, causing the cancellation of all flights at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The volcanic ash drifted across parts of western Indonesia, leading to disruptions in air travel for 209 flight movements and about 22,800 passengers, including domestic routes to Makassar and international destinations like Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, and Amsterdam.

No casualties or evacuation orders were issued, but residents and visitors were advised to stay at least 3 kilometers from the volcano's active crater. The eruption was the offspring of the famous Krakatau, whose 1883 eruption caused a global cooling period and a tsunami that killed at least 430 people in Sumatra and Java in 2018.

Anak Krakatau, now only about a quarter of its original size, remains in second-highest alert status.
