Mudslide kills 2 and leaves 10 missing in China

Mudslides triggered by torrential rain from tropical cyclone Saudel claimed two lives and left ten people missing in eastern China, according to state media reports. The disaster struck Suichuan County in Jiangxi province on Saturday, damaging a dozen homes and prompting authorities to relocate residents to safer locations to avert further peril.

Rescuers quickly mobilized to the affected area, with one individual among the missing being recovered dead, while two others were pulled alive and reported in good health. CCTV, China's state broadcaster, later confirmed that one of the remaining missing persons was found deceased among the fallen structures.

Typhoon Saudel made landfall multiple times in neighboring Zhejiang and Fujian provinces before reaching Jiangxi. In Fujian, over 100 houses collapsed in Huating Town following days of heavy rainfall, leaving several residents unaccounted for. The dike in the region breached on Thursday, flooding nearby villages and trapping occupants.

As of Friday night, approximately 600,000 residents had been evacuated from risky offshore and onshore areas in Fujian to prevent potential harm. Images from CCTV depicted streets turned into rivers, underscoring the severity of the situation, with rescue teams deploying inflatable boats to aid in the ongoing efforts.
