Assailant lunged at Democratic candidate for Ohio governor, campaign says

Amy Acton, the Democratic candidate for Ohio governor, faced an armed assailant during a campaign stop at the Canfield Fair on Sunday. Several people were injured when the suspect lunged at Acton, knocking volunteers to the ground. The attacker was subsequently arrested after being found to have weapons, according to Mahoning county Democratic party chairperson Chris Anderson.

Acton herself was not harmed but expressed gratitude for the prompt response from law enforcement and prayed for the recovery of those injured. The incident was condemned by Anderson, who stated that such violence has no place in Ohio. Communications director Addie Bullock added that Dr. Acton will always stand up against chaos, hate, and vitriol.

Meanwhile, Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy criticized the incident, emphasizing that candidates should be able to meet voters without threats or violence. Michigan's Democratic US Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayad also denounced the attack, calling for peaceful resolution of political differences. The fairground's police department referred inquiries to the Mahoning county sheriff's department, which has yet to provide a statement. The Ohio state highway patrol has also failed to respond to requests for information.
