Barcelona sign Gabriel Jesus for €10m after Alvarez move falls through

Barcelona secured Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal on Tuesday for a fee of around €10 million, sealing the deal after their pursuit of winger Julian Alvarez fell through. The statement from Barcelona confirmed the signing, which will keep Jesus at the club until 2029. The Catalan champions aimed to bolster their attack, following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres earlier in the summer.

Jesus, 29, previously played for Manchester City, where he scored 95 goals in six seasons before joining Arsenal. He suffered a serious knee injury in January 2025, which impacted his time at Arsenal, where he was behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres in Mikel Arteta’s hierarchy. Despite the setback, Jesus expressed his excitement about joining Barcelona, stating that he is eager to give his best and has fully recovered from his injury.

Hansi Flick, the Barcelona manager, praised Jesus' playing style, noting that he believes the forward can greatly contribute to the team's success. Jesus also acknowledged the significant role his sporting director, Deco, played in making the transfer possible.

As of now, this is Barcelona's seventh signing of the summer transfer window, which has already seen the additions of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Jesse Bisiwu, Joao Cancelo, Rodri, and Dominik Livakovic. In a related move, the club also confirmed a late loan deal for midfielder Marc Casado from Deportivo La Coruna, who will join Barcelona until the end of the season.
