After over 200 days at sea, US aircraft carrier arrives in Thailand

US Navy aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln docked at Thailand's Laem Chabang deep-sea port on Wednesday, concluding a voyage spanning over 200 days at sea. The carrier, housing approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines, holds the record for the longest continuous period spent at sea, surpassing typical naval deployments that usually last six to nine months.

During times of conflict, these deployments can extend further. The vessel will remain in Thailand for a five-day rest and recovery period, marking the United States' sole treaty partner in mainland Southeast Asia. Accompanied by other US naval ships, the Lincoln's arrival has sparked optimism for an economic boost in Pattaya, a resort city renowned for its sex tourism.

Around 40 buses will transport the military personnel between Pattaya and the Laem Chabang port, where the vessels will anchor. Mayor Poramase Ngampiches of Pattaya cautioned that certain activities, including water sports, jet skiing, bungee jumping, wrestling, and boxing, are off-limits for the military personnel. Enhanced police patrols are expected around Pattaya's main beachfront and nightlife district following weekend raids that resulted in the arrest of 40 to 50 individuals suspected of prostitution.

While illegal in Thailand, the sex industry remains visible in popular tourist areas, particularly in Bangkok and Pattaya, despite periodic crackdowns.
