US aircraft carrier arrives in Thailand after months at sea

A US aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, arrived in Thailand's Laem Chabang port on Wednesday, marking its first port call in nine months after a deployment of 286 days at sea. The 5,000 sailors and Marines on board are headed to the popular Thai resort of Pattaya for rest and recreation, a tradition since the Vietnam War era.

Rear Admiral Robert Loughran, commander of the US Carrier Strike Group 3, stated that the visit would allow the crew to "rest and recharge." The Lincoln's commanding officer, Captain Dan Keeler, emphasized that the historic deployment would provide the crew with a chance to enjoy Thailand, a beautiful and historic country. A local official in Pattaya confirmed that the ship was expected to dock shortly before lunchtime.

The Lincoln, which was originally sent to the Middle East following US-Israeli attacks on Iran, recently faced criticism over alleged deteriorating living conditions and mental health issues among its crew, including attempted suicides. Pattaya mayor Poramase Ngampiches welcomed the visit, saying the city would focus on safety and fair pricing for the sailors.

However, there have been reports of bans on water sports and cannabis use, with some bars reporting tightened security measures. Democratic lawmakers have called for an investigation into the conditions on the USS Abraham Lincoln, but Trump dismissed the concerns. The carrier will be replaced by the USS George Washington, followed by the USS Theodore Roosevelt, as the US continues its presence in the Arabian Sea for strike missions over Iran and to enforce a naval blockade of Iranian ports.
