Birthday boy Monfils beats Vallejo in first round of his last US Open

French tennis star Gael Monfils turned 40 on Tuesday, and celebrated his milestone birthday with a victory at the US Open. Monfils defeated Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, ensuring his farewell Grand Slam campaign remains a possibility. The match came after fellow veteran Stan Wawrinka played his final Grand Slam match of his career.

Monfils showcased his determination, bouncing back from a sluggish start to ultimately win the match. He became the oldest player to win a main-draw singles match at Flushing Meadows since Jimmy Connors in 1992.
