Photos reveal devastating aftermath of massive Russian airstrike on Kyiv

A devastating Russian missile and drone assault on Kyiv and its surrounding regions has resulted in at least four casualties and over a dozen injuries, according to Ukrainian officials. The strikes occurred as children were due to return to school following the summer break, and as authorities heightened security measures due to fears of additional Russian attacks.

The Kyiv regional military administration chief, Tymur Tkachenko, reported the assault via Telegram, stating, "Tonight, the Kyiv region came under a massive attack by Russian missiles and strike drones." Witnesses in the capital city heard approximately a dozen loud explosions and observed flashes in the sky shortly after the air force issued a warning about incoming ballistic missiles.

According to the city military administration, three people were killed in the enemy attack on the capital, and reports indicated five individuals were wounded.

The assault targeted Boryspil, located east of Kyiv, where a business was damaged, resulting in the death of one person and another person sustaining injuries. Eight additional individuals were reported to have been wounded when a residential building was struck. The Ukrainian air force had previously warned of the persistent threat of ballistic weapons and other attack methods against Kyiv and the region, urging residents to remain in shelters.

As Ukrainian children were set to resume their education on Tuesday, the Kyiv regional military administration cautioned against holding large gatherings in high-risk areas. Kyiv and its surrounding areas have been subjected to sustained pressure from Russian drone attacks in recent weeks, with jet-powered drones exacerbating the threat and triggering up to a dozen air-raid alerts daily.

A weekend attack on an ammunition depot in the capital's suburbs claimed the lives of 38 people. Both sides have escalated long-range strikes in recent months, targeting infrastructure, including warehouses, businesses, oil and port facilities, as well as ships, resulting in an increase in civilian casualties. Ukraine is currently facing a shortage of interceptor missiles, particularly US-made Patriot systems utilized against ballistic threats.
