Ukraine tightens Kyiv security measures as Russian drone strikes intensify

Kyiv, Ukraine has implemented stricter security measures for public transport, schools, and parliament in response to a surge in Russian drone attacks, aimed at paralyzing the capital. Since last week, jet-powered drones have been attacking Kyiv and surrounding areas, triggering multiple air-raid alerts per day and significantly impacting businesses.

On Saturday, a weekend attack on an ammunition depot killed 38 people in the capital's suburbs, while another attack killed a two-year-old girl in a Kyiv park on Saturday. The Kyiv regional military administration urges caution, advising against large gatherings in areas with a high risk of attacks, including schools. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the military administration, emphasized the importance of preventing large gatherings of children, parents, and educational staff.

City hall is also preparing changes, including remote learning in schools, and has established an underground shelter for parliament, ensuring MPs can seek shelter within 10 minutes of danger. The city of Kyiv, divided by the Dnieper River, has seen the metro stop crossing it, causing traffic issues. Mayor Vitali Klitschko revealed during a Telegram meeting with officials that one metro line would remain open.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergiy Koretskyi warned that prolonged air-raid alerts affect safety, businesses, logistics, transportation, schools, and kindergartens, urging the adaptation of security rules to protect people and maintain the ability to live in cities. Some residents question the effectiveness of the security protocols, while experts suggest a more flexible approach, fearing that continuous disruptions from a single drone attack could severely impact the capital's ability to function.
