MOH monitors rise in respiratory infections and conjunctivitis in Sarawak amid haze crisis

Sarawak's Ministry of Health (MOH) is closely monitoring a rise in respiratory infections and conjunctivitis cases amid the ongoing haze crisis. Deputy Health Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib stated that health facilities are being monitored to promptly address any increase in cases linked to the haze. According to the Sarawak State Health Department (JKN), average acute respiratory tract infections (URTI) cases have risen from approximately 1,717 per week to 1,752 recently.

Conjunctivitis cases have likewise increased from an average of about 17 to 21 per week, while overall asthma activity remains stable at the state level. The MOH is continuously monitoring the current situation and ensuring that health facilities and workers are prepared for a potential rise in cases due to the haze. This information was shared during a visit to the Jalan Oya Health Clinic in Sibu, Sarawak, during the Borneo Health Tour Series 4, which highlighted the Ministry's preparedness in handling health situations related to haze.

Hanifah advised the public, especially at-risk groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory problems, to take precautions when air quality reached unhealthy levels.
