MOH monitors rise in respiratory infections and conjunctivitis in Sarawak amid haze crisis

The Ministry of Health (MOH) in Sarawak is keeping a close watch on the growing number of respiratory infections and conjunctivitis cases amid the haze crisis affecting various regions in the state, according to Deputy Health Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib. Hanifah assured that continuous monitoring is being conducted through health facilities, including clinics and hospitals, to promptly address any surge in haze-related cases.

During the beginning of the year, the average number of URTI cases was around 1,717 per week, which has since risen to approximately 1,752 cases per week. Conjunctivitis cases have also risen from an average of about 17 to 21 cases per week. Overall, asthma activity in the state remains stable. Hanifah emphasized that the Ministry of Health is constantly monitoring the situation, including the trend of patient arrivals at health facilities, to ensure that health facilities and personnel are ready to handle an increase in cases due to the haze.

During a visit to the Jalan Oya Health Clinic, Hanifah spoke to the media about the Ministry's preparedness in dealing with health situations related to haze. She advised the public, particularly at-risk groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory problems, to take necessary precautions when air quality is deemed unhealthy.
