Iran president says Tehran would 'immediately' reciprocate if US returns to June deal

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan — Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian declared on Tuesday that Tehran would immediately reciprocate if the United States returned to the June deal aimed at ending their conflict. Pezeshkian stated explicitly that if the U.S. fulfills its commitments under the memorandum of understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will take reciprocal action, as reported by the Iranian presidency's website.

The memorandum of understanding sought to put an end to the months of hostilities between Tehran and Washington, which started in late February with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran that resulted in the death of former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The deal subsequently fell apart, with each side blaming the other for breaching its terms.

Pezeshkian emphasized that the repeated violation of commitments by the United States under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding demonstrated the need for effective enforcement guarantees and a return to a policy of diplomacy, as the U.S. actions of pressure and threats could undermine the diplomatic path.
