Thailand shortens visa-free stays for dozens of nations from Sep 15

Thailand will reduce the visa-free stay period for travelers from over 60 countries and territories to just 30 days, beginning September 15, according to the foreign ministry. This move, aimed at addressing crime involving foreign nationals, follows a series of recent arrests of foreigners accused of drug offenses, sex trafficking, and operating unauthorized businesses.

Currently, tourists from more than 90 nations, including the Schengen area, China, India, the US, and numerous South American countries, can stay up to 60 days without a visa. The reduction to 30 days applies to these 60+ countries and territories, including China, the US, and 27 EU nations. The Thai foreign ministry's consular affairs department confirmed the change on Tuesday.

However, the visa-free status for about 20 other countries remains unclear, with a foreign ministry official declining to comment. For around 20 additional countries, the visa-free stay will now be extended to 90 days, up from 60 days. Tourists will be allowed to extend their stay once, at the discretion of an immigration officer.

Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow revealed this plan earlier this month as part of efforts to combat individuals exploiting the visa system for criminal activities. As of the beginning of the year, Thailand had welcomed 20.9 million foreign tourists, marking a 3% decline compared to the same period in 2025, according to the latest official figures.
