Google Maps now shows ’Lake America’ in US, not ’Lake Ontario’

Google Maps has updated its US version of the popular map application to display "Lake America" instead of its traditional name, "Lake Ontario". This change was made to align with President Donald Trump's executive order renaming the lake. The alteration is due to the escalating trade dispute between the US and Canada, resulting in reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars in goods.

The decision impacts U.S. users of Google Maps only, as Canadian and international users will continue to see the lake as "Lake Ontario". The White House, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford's office have not yet commented on the matter. This was not the first time Google Maps made such a change following Trump's executive orders, as they also renamed the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" on his first day in office.
