Google Maps now show ‘Lake America’ in US, not ‘Lake Ontario’

Following the executive order signed by President Donald Trump, Google Maps has begun displaying the name "Lake America" for US users, instead of the traditional "Lake Ontario". This change is a direct result of the renaming ordered by Trump in response to an escalating trade dispute with Canada. The alteration is limited to US users, with those in Canada and outside of North America continuing to see the lake under its original name.

Google Maps explained that their updates are based on official government sources, specifically the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which governs the naming standards for US maps. Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul have all reacted to the change, with Ford declaring the lake will always be called Lake Ontario.

Ontario's Liquor Control Board of Ontario, a major global buyer, has also been affected, not stocking US alcohol due to the trade war. Some Ontario government agency websites, which rely on Google Maps for map data, are currently reviewing their sites to ensure they display the lake correctly as "Lake Ontario".
