‘We’ve lost everything’ — Akwa Ibom indigenes in South Africa appeal to Eno

The Akwa Ibom Indigenes Organisation (AKIOSA) in South Africa has urgently requested financial aid from Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, to help hundreds of Akwa Ibom residents who have been affected by recent xenophobic violence. Dr. Akaninyene F. Willie, the president of AKIOSA’s executive committee, wrote to Governor Eno outlining the dire situation faced by the community.

Several Akwa Ibom families have been displaced by attacks and are in desperate need of temporary housing and the means to survive. The violence has caused widespread economic devastation, with professionals, artisans, and traders particularly hard hit. Many have lost their businesses, livelihoods, and income, while the constant threat of violence has left many traumatised.

AKIOSA acknowledges the efforts of Governor Eno's Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters, Linda Akon Umoh, but insists that direct financial intervention is now critical. The organisation is calling for the establishment of an emergency fund to provide urgent cash relief for food, medical care, and basic necessities, as well as short-term housing and rental assistance for displaced individuals.

They also request grants to help businesses affected by the violence to recover by replacing tools, restocking shops, and resuming operations. Dr. Willie stressed that the affected indigenes are still vital contributors to the state’s economy, and their assistance would help safeguard their investments and aid their recovery. The organisation made this appeal because many affected Akwa Ibom residents cannot return to normal economic activities and are unable to provide basic needs for their families.

Dr. Willie concluded by appealing to Governor Eno to act urgently to prevent further loss and suffering.
