Emphasise dangers of mule accounts to children, parents urged

PENAMPANG (August 29, 2023) - Parents are being urged to educate their children, particularly teenagers, about the dangers of mule accounts, according to Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ewon Benedick. The warning comes as part of the fourth edition of the Digital Parenting Programme for the Kapayan constituency, organised by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN).

Mule accounts, which involve using someone else's bank account for fraudulent activities, pose a significant risk to young people who may be lured by irresponsible individuals, Ewon said during the programme's official opening. He emphasized that parents must remind their children not to be deceived and to avoid allowing others to use their accounts.

The Deputy Chief Minister highlighted the growing reliance on digital technology in daily life, noting that online transactions are now essential for financial dealings, business, and accessing government services. However, he stressed the importance of using digital tools responsibly and not allowing young people to become overly dependent on smartphones, as this could detract from their responsibilities and other aspects of life.

Ewon welcomed the parents' participation in the programme, which featured three talks by LPPKN, and expressed hope that the event would equip them to guide their children in using digital technology safely and wisely. He also acknowledged his own role as a father and pledged to continue supporting such initiatives that benefit the community and remind him of his responsibilities.
