Mahama tasks Zanetor to provide decisive leadership in galamsey fight

President John Dramani Mahama has charged Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the recently appointed Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, to lead decisively in combating illegal mining, also known as galamsey. The President emphasized that the destruction of Ghana's forests and water bodies due to illegal mining poses the most severe threat to the nation's survival, necessitating strong and determined action.

Addressing Dr Agyeman-Rawlings at her swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, August 29, Mahama called for her to prioritize the safeguarding of Ghana's natural resources and strive towards a healthier environment for future generations. He underscored that her medical background offers a unique vantage point, highlighting that the environment is inextricably linked to human health.

Polluted rivers, contaminated soils, poor sanitation, unsafe air, and indiscriminate waste disposal can ultimately manifest as health issues in hospitals and among the populace.

Mahama made it clear that Dr Agyeman-Rawlings' role encompasses both environmental and health dimensions. As the new Minister, her primary responsibility is to provide resolute leadership to protect Ghana's natural resources while ensuring a healthier future for generations to come. The President reiterated that his administration would persist in taking firm action against those whose activities prioritize private profit over the collective welfare of Ghanaians.
