NASA is about to launch a space telescope that could change how we see the universe

NASA's upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is set to spend a significant portion of its mission peering deep into the Milky Way's bulge, a star-rich central region. This prolonged observation will provide insights into the galaxy's exoplanet population. The telescope will spend over a quarter of its planned five-year mission observing this region, known as the Galactic Bulge Time-Domain Survey.

By monitoring hundreds of millions of stars, Roman will be well-positioned to detect rare, fleeting events like microlensing, which occurs when a background star's light is briefly distorted by the gravitational pull of a foreground object—potentially an exoplanet. While microlensing events are rare, Roman's advanced optics will enable it to detect hundreds of millions of stars, making such events commonplace for the telescope.

Transits, or the periodic dimming of a star caused by a planet passing in front of it, will also be monitored. These recurring events will allow for more in-depth studies of transiting systems, potentially uncovering thousands of additional exoplanets. The telescope's sensitivity is such that even small, Earth-like planets could be detected.

Beyond exoplanets, Roman's observations are expected to reveal a wealth of other celestial objects, including new stars, brown dwarfs, and even black holes. The survey will also contribute to understanding the age and composition of the Milky Way's bulge, providing valuable insights into the galaxy's formation and evolution.
