NIsBEC Drives Innovation in Behavioural Science

The Nigerian Institute for Behavioural Science, Education and Care Professionals (NIsBEC) has officially launched its operations in Lagos, marking a significant milestone in the progression of behavioural science, special education, and care practices within Nigeria. The institute, founded with the mission to uphold the highest standards of applied behaviour analysis, special education, and allied care professionals, aims to be a central hub for professionals in these fields.

NIsBEC's establishment seeks to promote access, transparency, professional development, public awareness, and adherence to best practices among care professionals, behavior specialists, special education teachers, and other stakeholders.

During the launch, Dr. Eziafakaku Nwokolo, a member of the NIsBEC Board of Directors and Trustees, emphasized the institute's vision to become a center for innovation and professional development. Dr. Nwokolo stated, “Our goal is to empower practitioners, influence policy, and create a platform for research and knowledge exchange that will transform behavioural science, special education and care in Nigeria”.

The organization recognizes the critical role of professionals in supporting individuals with autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, learning difficulties, and other special educational needs. It strives to ensure that the quality of these services is maintained through rigorous training, ethical conduct, and a reliable professional registry.

NIsBEC's certification pathways cater to four broad areas: behavioural science, special education, allied health, and care, which include paraprofessional, professional, and advanced professional practice. This system emphasizes professional competence, integrity, respect, informed consent, confidentiality, safeguarding, collaboration, and person-centered practice.

Upon successful completion of the certification process, professionals receive their full NIsBEC certification and are listed in the NIsBEC Registry, a transparent and accessible database for employers, organizations, families, and others to verify the certification status of practitioners.

The institute's launch attracted a diverse assembly of professionals, government officials, parents, healthcare providers, educators, and media representatives. Discussions during the event centered on research, advocacy, and collaboration. These conversations highlighted NIsBEC's commitment to supporting behavioral research and advocating for policies that enhance mental health and educational systems.

The organization also plans to forge partnerships with schools, hospitals, universities, and care organizations to expand its impact nationwide. Additionally, NIsBEC is set to engage with the community through workshops, outreach programs, and awareness campaigns aimed at promoting behavioral health and education.
