SpaceX plans to plant $100B Starbase on Louisiana coast

SpaceX has unveiled ambitious plans to invest $100 billion in a Louisiana spaceport, Starbase, set to support hundreds of launches each year. Construction is slated to commence in 2027, with the first Starship launch anticipated in 2029. The spaceport will boast its own propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping, vehicle processing facilities, and an airport.

Louisiana Economic Development (LED) expressed enthusiasm, estimating that the project will create 3,000 direct jobs and 8,100 indirect jobs within a decade. Upon completion, Starbase will consist of five launch complexes, each equipped with two launch pads and a propellant farm. Initial construction will take place in Vermilion Parish, and SpaceX has already collaborated with local agencies to mitigate potential impacts on wildlife, fisheries, and their habitats.

The Louisiana shoreline is losing between 3.3 and 23 feet (1 to 7 meters) annually, a concern SpaceX intends to address through initiatives like shoreline protection breakwaters, marshland restoration, and coastal wildlife preservation. However, critics have raised concerns over SpaceX's environmental record, particularly regarding the safety of Starship tests in Boca Chica, Texas.

Louisiana officials should learn from Boca Chica's history of mishaps and focus on marshland restoration. While Starbase holds the promise of frequent orbital missions for internet connectivity, AI data centers, lunar colonization, and multiplanetary life, it is crucial to acknowledge that Starship has not yet reached orbit or shown the required reusability for the project's claimed thousands of launches.
