Raumfahrt: SpaceX plant neue Starbase für 100 Milliarden Dollar

SpaceX has announced plans to invest $100 billion in constructing a massive spaceport on the Louisiana coast, christened "Starbase." Scheduled to commence construction in 2027, the site aims to host thousands of launches annually. The first Starship launch from the facility is anticipated to take place in 2029. This ambitious project will encompass various state-of-the-art facilities, including propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping capabilities, vehicle processing, and an airport.

Louisiana Economic Development (LED) has expressed enthusiasm over the plans, estimating that the project could create approximately 3,000 direct jobs and 8,100 indirect jobs over the next decade. The final structure will consist of five launch complexes, each equipped with two launch pads and a propellant farm.

The designated location for Starbase is Vermilion Parish. LED has also engaged several state agencies, including the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, and others, to address potential impacts on local wildlife, fisheries, and their habitats. SpaceX has pledged to collaborate with state and federal authorities on initiatives like Gulf shoreline protection breakwaters, marshland restoration, and coastal wildlife preservation.

However, SpaceX's environmental record has been under scrutiny, particularly regarding the erosion of the Vermilion Parish shoreline, which is estimated to be between 3.3 and 23 feet (1 to 7 meters) per year. The company has assured that it will work with relevant agencies on projects aimed at mitigating these issues.

Given the Boca Chica facility's history of issues, such as Starship explosions and concrete spraying from a damaged launchpad, Louisiana authorities would be prudent to learn from past experiences. Starship, despite its ambitious goals, has yet to reach orbit and demonstrate the reusability required for thousands of launches as planned for the Louisiana facility.
