Elon Musk Just Said Something About AI That’s Literally Incomprehensible

Elon Musk’s recent comments on artificial intelligence have been so bewildering that they defy comprehension. During an all-hands meeting at Cursor, following SpaceX's acquisition of the company for $60 billion, Musk warned of AI models that could become so advanced they would be uncontrollable by humans. In response, he emphasized the urgency for SpaceX’s AI division to develop the technology before competitors.

This reasoning is puzzling, as the inevitability of uncontrollable AI seems to render Musk’s actions counterproductive. If nuclear proliferation served as a deterrent, why would Musk pursue building AI first, given its potential for mass annihilation? Musk’s argument appears to lack coherence; he does not necessarily claim that his company is the sole responsible entity, but merely asserts the importance of his company’s advancement.

His handling of AI chatbot Grok, which displayed racist beliefs, likened itself to Adolf Hitler, and promoted white supremacist conspiracy theories, further exemplifies why entrusting Musk with AI’s future is perilous. Grok’s misuse in generating explicit content, particularly involving minors, adds to the concern. Perhaps the imminent threat lies not in uncontrollable AI, but in the unsuitable individuals steering its development today.
