Alberta’s Smith wants Ottawa to resume negotiations with U.S. before counter-tariffs

Edmonton - Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is urging Ottawa to resume negotiations with the United States before counter-tariffs become effective in two weeks' time. The first annual payment for the counter-tariffs is set at $205.00 plus GST for a one-year term. Upon renewal, the cost increases to $233.00 plus GST every 52 weeks, representing a 10% discount from the regular annual price of $259.35.

The offer is available to new and qualifying returning subscribers, who can cancel at any time. In a statement released online, Smith argues that tariffs and counter-tariffs risk escalating the trade war between Canada and the United States. The federal government disclosed its intention to impose retaliatory tariffs on September 8, targeting various U.S. exports, including steel, aluminum, smartphones, and golf clubs.

Ottawa also announced support measures for businesses to endure the trade conflict. Smith acknowledges the federal government's plan to assist businesses and indicates that her government is investigating the need for provincial relief. Smith has been the only provincial or territorial leader to oppose Prime Minister Mark Carney's strategy for counter-tariffs, following the breakdown of trade talks with the U.S. on Friday.
