They tended to chickens, pigs, and grew onions, herbs, and peaches, exchanging them for pears. However, relentless industrial noise from a power plant has forced them out, according to CBS News.

Krystal Polk, 52, recounted her family's history, explaining that their ancestors were the first of their race to own land. When her parents bought the property decades ago, they discovered a racist message written by the Ku Klux Klan at the base of a hill. Despite centuries of systemic barriers and intimidation, the family persevered.

This way of life abruptly changed when a massive power plant was constructed directly across the street, home to Elon Musk's AI data centers in the Memphis region. The facility's constant noise drove the family away, leaving their long-time home abandoned and overshadowed by the mechanical drone.

This power plant is part of a larger infrastructure buildout for Elon Musk's data operations, which has sparked opposition from Southaven residents. They argue that the high-output generators have caused unmanageable noise and air pollution in their residential community.

The Safe and Sound Coalition, a resident-run group, has filed a petition demanding the shutdown of the power plant. They express concerns about transparency and regulatory accountability, questioning whether the public's voice is being heard in decisions impacting their health, environment, and quality of life. The coalition advocates for clean air, quiet nights, responsible growth, and honest leadership.
