Ukraine: UK PM Andy Burnham to visit Kyiv in show of support

Andy Burnham embarks on his inaugural foreign excursion as prime minister, arriving in Kyiv on Monday to bolster the United Kingdom's unwavering support for Ukraine. The visit coincides with the nation's 35th anniversary of independence, providing an opportune moment to honor Ukraine's sovereignty. Burnham will convene the inaugural meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing," a coalition initiated by the UK and France under his predecessor, Sir Keir Starmer.

Additionally, he will accept an award symbolizing British solidarity with Ukraine and participate in independence day festivities.

The prime minister's visit follows a series of Russian airstrikes against Ukraine, including a recent assault on a shopping center that resulted in at least 16 fatalities. Burnham emphasized, "On Ukraine's 35th anniversary of independence, the Ukrainian people should have no doubt: the UK stands firmly behind you today and for as long as it takes." He expressed pride in the United Kingdom's contributions to Ukraine and reaffirmed that the nation's support remains steadfast, asserting, "Ukraine's security is our security."

Burnham highlighted the enduring nature of the friendship between Ukraine and the UK, stating, "The friendship Ukraine shares with the UK will long outlast Russia's illegal war. Russia should be in no doubt of our resolve. We will not back down until there is a just and lasting peace." This sentiment comes after Moscow threatened repercussions concerning the utilization of British drones by Ukraine in its intensified strikes on Russian infrastructure.

Kyiv has intensified long-range attacks targeting Moscow and key Russian regions, focusing on oil refineries and warehouses of the country's largest online retailer, Wildberries. The Russian embassy in the UK has accused Britain of deliberately escalating the crisis, warning of the potential consequences of increased UK involvement. Burnham, however, maintained that the UK remains committed to providing support to Ukraine in defending itself, echoing the stance of previous administrations.

Furthermore, Burnham announced that the government has granted permission for defense company MBDA to declassify information regarding UK components for the long-range Scalp missile, a French counterpart to the UK's Storm Shadow. Both missiles incorporate shared British and French technology, and President Emmanuel Macron is exploring the establishment of local assembly lines for Scalp missiles in Ukraine.

The visit of Zelensky to Downing Street shortly after Burnham assumed office underscores the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations. The timing of Burnham's visit is strategic, occurring amid Russia's confirmation that its ambassador to the UK, Andrei Kelin, has departed London, though there has been no official replacement announced.
