Fast-moving wildfire threatens Reno as tens of thousands ordered to flee

A fast-moving wildfire, dubbed the Hawk Fire, has rapidly approached the city of Reno, Nevada, prompting officials to urge tens of thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. As of Sunday, approximately 42,000 people had already fled their residences, while another 45,000 were told to be prepared to depart. The fire, only a day old, has expanded to cover 15,040 acres (6,087 hectares) and is currently burning about five miles (8 km) northwest of Reno. The metropolitan area of over 280,000 people is situated within the urban sprawl.

The blaze has already damaged a few mountaintop homes and inflicted injuries on six individuals, including three first responders, according to local media accounts. The Hawk Fire has exhibited "extreme fire behavior," as noted by InciWeb, the US government agency responsible for tracking fire activity. Images shared on X by the local fire service depict flames and towering smoke plumes atop mountains that overlook the city.

In response to the escalating situation, Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County, where Reno is located. The fire's rapid spread and its potential to threaten homes and structures have been emphasized in the governor's declaration. Reno, situated in northwestern Nevada near the California border and the Lake Tahoe tourist destination in the Sierra Nevada mountains, is particularly vulnerable due to its location.

Local fire chief Richard Edwards issued a warning to residents, urging them to be ready to evacuate immediately upon receiving instructions, or even earlier. Edwards highlighted the dynamic nature of the Hawk Fire, driven by powerful winds that propel it rapidly into residential areas. He stressed the need for residents to take the situation seriously and remain vigilant for further evacuation orders.
