Burnham to visit Kyiv on first foreign trip and reaffirm UK support for Ukraine

Andy Burnham, newly appointed Prime Minister, embarks on his maiden foreign visit to Kyiv on Monday. The primary purpose of his trip is to reaffirm the United Kingdom's unwavering support for Ukraine and to pay tribute to the country's Independence Day. This marks Burnham's inaugural foreign engagement as the head of the UK government.

The prime minister will convene the initial meeting of the "coalition of the willing," an alliance established by the UK and France under the previous leadership of Sir Keir Starmer. Additionally, Burnham will present an accolade on behalf of the British populace, acknowledging the nation's backing for Ukraine. He will also participate in events commemorating Ukraine's Independence Day.

Burnham's visit to Kyiv is a response to the intensifying Russian attacks on Ukraine, including a strike on a shopping center that resulted in at least 16 deaths this week. Ahead of his arrival, Burnham expressed the UK's steadfast support for Ukraine, stating that the friendship between the two nations would endure beyond Russia's unlawful war. He emphasized that Ukraine's security is intrinsically linked to the UK's security and pledged the UK's unwavering commitment.

Kyiv has escalated its long-range attacks on Moscow and other Russian territories, targeting oil refineries and warehouses of the country's largest e-commerce platform, Wildberries. In retaliation, the Russian embassy in the UK has threatened repercussions for the utilization of British drones by Ukraine in its ongoing military operations. Burnham has consistently maintained that the UK will remain a steadfast ally, ready to support Ukraine in its time of need, regardless of the escalating conflict.

Furthermore, Burnham plans to announce the UK's approval for defense company MBDA to declassify information regarding British components used in the long-range Scalp missile, a French counterpart to the UK's Storm Shadow. This agreement allows for the potential establishment of assembly lines for the Scalp missile in Ukraine, involving both British and French technology.

Upon Burnham's ascension to the Prime Minister's office in July, Zelensky became the first foreign leader to visit Downing Street. The visit to Kyiv takes place amidst Russia's announcement that its ambassador to the UK, Andrei Kelin, has tendered his resignation, though no replacement has been appointed yet. The Kremlin has not specified whether this move signifies a potential downgrade in diplomatic relations between the two nations.
