Trump Waves the Green Flag to Start the Indycar Race as Drivers Zoom through Washington’s Streets

Washington hosted an IndyCar race through its streets on Sunday, with President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump initiating the Freedom 250 Grand Prix by leading a slow lap in the presidential limousine. Following their lap, the president waved the green flag to commence the race, and drivers raced through downtown Washington, including a segment along Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House.

President Trump, speaking on Fox prior to the race, expressed his intention to enjoy the event in a secure car, albeit slightly slower than the ones spectators would witness. This year's celebration of America's 250th birthday has included various Trump-hosted events, such as a UFC fight on the White House lawn, military aircraft flyovers, a fireworks show on the National Mall, and a Great American State Fair.

These events have been characterized by Trumpian flair, featuring appearances from his friends, a focus on spectacle, Americana, and power. The race featured performances by tenor Christopher Macchio, who sang "The Star-Spangled Banner," a trained bald eagle released near the start line, and flyovers of military aircraft, including a formation with a B-2 stealth bomber, which Trump frequently highlights for its role in the recent conflict with Iran.

The IndyCar race took place amid ongoing disputes between the U.S. and Iran, which have contributed to rising gasoline prices and concerns among his Republican Party base about the president's focus on cost-of-living issues. Trump has increasingly emphasized the ceremonial aspects of his presidency, including sporting event visits, such as attending the World Cup final and waving the green flag to start the race.
