Trump takes starring role at Washington's IndyCar debut

US President Donald Trump participated in the inaugural IndyCar race in Washington D.C. to commemorate America's 250th birthday. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix was initiated by Trump through executive order. The 400km (250-mile) race took place on iconic landmarks and highways, reaching speeds of up to 185 mph (298 km/h). Trump waved the green flag to start the race and praised the track and the event, stating it was bigger than anticipated.

American Kyle Kirkwood won the race, followed by Danish Christian Lundgaard and Australian Will Power. Trump greeted race organizers, including IndyCar series owner Roger Penske, and seven former Indianapolis 500 winners. Penske shared that the event had been in the works for 20 years, and Trump's involvement made it possible. First Lady Melania Trump watched the pre-race lap in Trump's armored limousine, known as "The Beast."

IndyCar series and Penske Racing covered most of the $35 million cost, with 215,000 attendees. The event included flyovers by a stealth bomber and Air Force One, with air traffic paused at Reagan National Airport.
